Eastern Nepal offers some of the finest trekking with Makalu, the fifth highest 8000 meter mountain on earth, being situated prominently in the region. The region as well as one of the most stunning treks to this area is justly named after this beautiful peak whose base camp is approached via pristine beyul, a scared hidden valley of Barun Khola.  Arun River watershed is the underlying artery of this trail in this region with a trail following the river itself as a fascinating option for a trek to the upper Arun River Villages near the Tibetan border located high above the Arun river gorge.

While the trek to Makalu Base camp itself is a moderate trek with only one strenuous pass crossing the Shipton La, and to complete the trek one retraces steps back to the trailhead at Tumlingtar, for exceptionally strong trekkers we can combine Makalu Base Camp trek with a high altitude traverse to Baruntse Base Camp at 6140m and via the West Col, of approximately same elevation, Panch Pokhari (5445m) and Amphu Lapchha La  (5845m) to Chukung Valley and from there via Pangboche to Namche Bazaar in Khumbu.  It is necessary here to emphasize that this traverse via Upper Honku Valley is only for those with some former mountaineering experience and appropriate physical endurance.

The concept of a beyul, a sacred hidden valley, was formulated by Padmasambhawa, aka Guru Rimpoche, the apostle of Tantric Buddhism throughout Nepal, Sikkim, and Bhutan Himalayas as well as Tibet. Coined as valleys of paradise, with vibrant nature, favorable climate and above all spiritually pure locations, the beyuls were hailed as repository of eternal spring and youth devoid of not only violence but negative thoughts, a place where spiritual enlightenment and nirvana were sure to be attained, hence a refuge for those who aspire to seek the peace amidst suffering and ultimate destruction with which the world may eventually by struck. Padmasambhava described some 104 of these remote valleys, of which Barun Valley is one. Solukhumbu of the Sherpas is regarded by them as one of those chosen refuges that they believe they searched for and found when some 500 years ago they crossed the High Himalaya from Tibet and found their home beneath the legendary Sagarmatha.
