Mt. Naya Kanga

Mt. Naya Kanga

Days from

Formerly known as Ganja La Chuli, Naya Kanga (5,844 m) rises to the west of Ganja La, and is a popular but difficult mountain to climb. The normal route to this peak is via the snowy north east ridge. It is not yet clear who climbed this summit first. The most important reward of climbing Naya Kanga is the spectacular view of mountains in or near Tibet.

Naya Kanga (5,844m) is the fabulous looking peak to the south of Kyanjin Gompa, the destination village of the popular Langtang Trek in the Langtang national Park.

The normal route to the summit is via the snowy north-east ridge over a line on ice and snow.

Much of the climb is straightforward and there is one fairly steep section on 40 to 55 degree steep snow where belaying is necessary.

The route is approached on the trail across the Ganja La, the tricky but direct pass from Langtang to Helambu. The climb is often incorporated into a crossing of the pass and can be done with two camps. The first is Ganja La base camp some 500 meters above Kyanjin Gompa and the second a high camp at around 4,900 meters. The summit offers sublime views of the peaks lying along the Langtang Valley and into Tibet. Ascending to Ganja La and the summit of Naya Kanga offer spectacular panoramic views of mountains in Nepal and Tibet including Langshisa Ri (6,370m/20,894ft), Pemthang-Ri (6,836m/22,422ft), Shisapangma (8,046m/27,749ft), Langtang Lirung (7,425m/24,354ft), Pemthang Kapro-Ri (6,830m/22,402ft) and Langtang II (6,571m/21,553ft).

The accessibility of Langtang from Kathmandu and the number of other climbable, lower altitude peaks make Langtang a great choice for a short climbing trip.
